Lyric Evaluation

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 1 month ago

Every year Sarabeth, the owner of the dance studio, and I do a duet. Last year, she wanted it to be the now popular "Bubbly" by Colby, but I wanted something more passionate. Our duets are always lyrical dances and I need to be able to feel the music in order for the duet to stand out from our other dances. So, instead, we chose "Human" by Jon McLaughlin.

Human

Can you tell me how we got in this situation

I can't seem to get you off my mind

All these ups and downs they

They trip up our good intentions

Nobody said this was an easy ride

After all, we're only human

Always fighting what we're feeling

Hurt instead of healing

After all we're only human

Is there any other reason

Why we stay instead of leaving

After all

Can we get back to the point in this conversation

When we saw things through each other's eyes

Cause now all I see is ruin and devastation

We all need some place we can hide inside

After all, we're only human

Always fighting what we're feeling

Hurt instead of healing

After all we're only human

Is there any other reason

Why we stay instead of leaving

I'm smart enough to know that life goes by

And it leaves a trail of broken hearts behind

If you feel I'm letting go, just give me time

I'll come running to your side

Can you tell me how we got into this situation

I can't seem to get you off my mind

After all, we're only human

Always fighting what we're feeling

Hurt instead of healing

After all we're only human

Is there any other reason why stay instead of leaving (Repeat)

After all

Narrative

This song is about a relationship that involves a person that you can't seem to walk away from. However, when you're together obstacles always seem to get in the way. The lyrics put emphasis on the fact that "We're only human", and use our feelings to dictate our lives instead of letting go and moving on. In the song, the relationship has come to the point where fighting is everyday and seeing eye to eye just isn't possible anymore. Even though the relationship can work itself out, the couple is fighting their love for one another.

Atmosphere

The style of this song could maybe be put as pop/alternative perhaps. Obviously this song is a passionate love song. Now, Jon McLaughlin is not entirely expressing his love for the girl in this song, but instead speaking of their mishappenings and letting her know that he isn't Superman, but only a human. The song is very serene yet filled with passion and hope at the same time.
