ORIGINS OF AMERICAN TAP
A melting pot of different cultures coming together to form a way of expression
Tap (a definition)
a step dance tapped out audibly by means of shoes with hard soles or soles and heels to which taps have been added
HISTORY
When slaves were brought to America, they used to be able to communicate through drums. Once this was found out, slaveowners forbade the drum use. The slaves then transferred the beats from the drum to their feet. Tap came about as early as 1890 from the lower class, African Americans and Irish immigrants with clogging, when they would have "battles" in which they would stand on a street corner and create rhythms with their feet.
